Carl Bryant is a lifelong boater who has 12 years’ experience with twin-screw 30-footers. He’s interested in swapping his 1992, 35-foot Carver aft-cabin cruiser, Sluggo, which he keeps in the Pacific Northwest, for a week between July and September with an East Coast boater.

This summer, Sluggo will be in the Anacortes area, a perfect jumping-off point for the San Juan Islands. In seven days, cruisers can choose among small harbors and resorts, or explore the 14 nearby Washington state parks with low-cost transient dockage. Roche Harbor and the Canadian gulf islands are only a few hours away, and scenic Victoria is about a 25-mile jaunt.

The San Juan Islands experience a tidal range of about 12 feet that you must allow for when anchoring and docking. Sluggo has an electric windlass and an all-chain rode; to get to shore, there is an 11-foot Boston Whaler with a 25-hp outboard.

Just last year, Sluggo received new electronics and an interior refit that included furnishings, carpet, fixtures, and heads. The master cabin is aft with an en suite head and separate shower. A saloon, separate dinette area, step-down galley, and V-berth cabin complete the layout.

Sluggo also has a diesel heater, WiFi-enabled computer/TV, and cellphone. Twin gasoline 5.71 Volvo Pentas reportedly push Sluggo to about a 14-knot cruising speed.

Bryant wants to swap for a comparable boat in New England, preferably faster than a trawler. He says “a responsible party with about five years’ [experience at the helm] would be good, but if you need a bow thruster to handle a 35-foot twin-screw, I don’t want to swap with you.”
