Getting There
By Cynthia Barnes Spring
2005
The Aeolian Islands are a paradise in every senseand
that includes being at the end of a rather long and twisted travel itinerary.
Boaters who plan to visit from the United States should allow an entire
day for travel after the overnight flight lands in Europe.
Your first bit of business is to get to Rome. From there,
Alitalia (800-223-5730, www.alitaliausa.com)
and Lufthansa (800-399-5838, www.lufthansa.com)
offer flights just over an hour long to Catania, on the island of Sicily.
The next leg to consider is by bus or taxi to Taormina,
a charming town that Marc-Udo Broich, president and CEO of Aicon Yachts,
says makes a nice stopover for a rest and a cold drink (or even a nights
stay). About 40 minutes from Taormina by taxi is Milazzo, where you can
catch a ferry out to the Aeolians or perhaps meet your boat.
Yes, its a bit more of an ordeal to see Italy
this way than it would be flying into Rome and visiting Vatican City,
but then again, the never-ending crowds there are probably praying for
a chance to get away to the exotic Aeolians.
