Getting There

Air New Zealand (800-262-1234, www.airnewzealand.com) offers flights once a week from Los Angeles to Tongatapu via Apia, Samoa.

Air Pacific (800-227-4446, www.airpacific.com) is Fiji’s national airline and has flights from Los Angeles and Honolulu to Nadi, Fiji, three times a week. It also has flights from Nadi to Tongatapu twice a week. If you have the time, I highly recommend a stopover stay in Fiji. Even a single-day layover can be wonderful because the bottom of Fiji’s Mamanuca chain is easily accessible from resorts near the airport in Nadi.

Polynesian Airlines (800-264-0823, www.polynesianairlines.com) is Samoa’s national airline. It offers flights once a week from Los Angeles and Honolulu to Tongatapu via Apia, Samoa.

Tonga’s domestic air carriers include flyNiU Airlines (011-676-28280 or 28281, www.flyniu.com) and Peau Vava’u Air (011-676-28304 or 28305). Both domestic carriers offer regular flights between Tongatapu and Vava’u. Visit www.tongaholiday.com for flight schedules.

If you have a layover on Tongatapu, the International Dateline Hotel Nuku’alofa (011-676-23411) offers comfortable accommodations, a restaurant, and airport transfers. Tongan floor shows are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Ask for a superior room; the standard rooms are the hotel’s oldest.

If you’re in need of accommodations on Vava’u, the Paradise International Hotel Neiafu (011-676-74744) is within walking distance of Neiafu’s hot spots and features Tongan feasts and floor shows.

For more options, contact the Tonga Visitors Bureau (011-676-25334) or visit www.tongaholiday.com.
