Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

Fish Creek is the arts capital of Door County. In addition to galleries and studios, cruising visitors will find “culture in the country” by checking out the Peninsula Players (said to be the nation’s oldest professional summer theater), the Peninsula Music Festival, the Peninsula Art School, the Door County Auditorium, Peninsula Dance, and the American Folklore Theatre. Whew! Almost every weekend finds at least one or two plays, recitals, or gallery openings. For up-to-date listings, head straight to the Visitor Information Center (www.doorcounty.com) at 4097 Main Street, a.k.a. Highway 42. There’s a 24-hour interactive kiosk there, as well.

There are so many beautiful places to picnic in Door County—including your yacht—that you might as well do it right. Located right on Main Street, Fish Creek Market (920-868-3351) is the place to provision. The deli section is packed with the makings of a perfect sandwich, or they’ll happily make one for you on the spot. There are steaks, salmon, and that Wisconsin favorite, smoked chub. Soft drinker? Try a bottled beverage from Baumeister, which makes orange soda, root beer, and Door County Cherry—a local favorite. If you’d rather have hooch, there’s a complete selection of beers, wine, and liquor, including vintages made right in Door County.
