Local Knowledge

Marsha Wilson, harbormaster at Fish Creek’s Alibi Dock, recommends common sense when navigating into Door County. “It’s not a tricky route by any means, if you follow your charts and keep a close eye on the navigational buoys,” she explains. “Islands and things must be watched out for, but if you keep your eyes open, you’ll be fine.”

Wilson reminds anyone cruising up from Lake Michigan to stay “a good mile or two” offshore, to avoid the reefs and rocks. Boaters in Green Bay can “pretty much run the shoreline without too much trouble,” but there are some reefs and islands in the center of the bay from Sturgeon Bay north.

She also recommends caution around the Strawberry Islands and when navigating Hat Island, off Egg Harbor.
