The Petaluma Visitors Program
(877-2-PETALUMA, www.visitpetaluma.com)
offers a Boaters Packet that includes everything from navigational
instructions to a history of the river and town. A mooring permit is needed
for the turning basins City Dock
(707-778-4303). The private Petaluma Yacht
Club (707-765-9725) offers privileges to members of some other
yacht clubs. The spiffy new Petaluma Marina
(707-778-4489) is also quite nice, but is several miles from the center
of downtown.
Napa is a different story when it comes to dockage,
but the locals are working on it. The town is in the midst of a $238-million
river restoration project that may include new docks along the city center
riverfront. Until then, you have to go with whats there. We tied
up at a makeshift dock in the city center that was scheduled to be dismantled
shortly after our visit. For information on the replacement plan, call
the Community Resources Department (707-257-9529).
The private Napa Yacht Club (707-252-3342),
south of town, offers privileges to members of some other yacht clubs.
When cruising to any of these spots on the Napa River,
keep a close eye on your charts and depthsounder. Floodplain terracing
is not visible on its eastern side, making it easy to run aground. San
Pablo Bay also requires attention to depth, thanks to extensive mudflats.
