Club Nautique

If you’re an East Coast resident who can’t cruise on your own boat’s bottom to California Wine Country, consider a bareboat or skippered charter with Club Nautique (800-343-SAIL, www.clubnautique.net). It has two locations on San Francisco Bay, and for 25 years has provided powerboat instruction, a trawler charter fleet, club facilities and activities, and yacht sales.

The bareboat fleet ranges from a Mainship Pilot 30 to a Mainship Trawler 43 (47-foot LOA), with prices for a weeklong bareboat cruise starting at $1,244 during the low season on the smallest boat. Add $75 per hour for a skipper, capped at six hours per day.

If you’re interested in hands-on boating education, Club Nautique also offers a basic trawler course (16 hours with two days on the water for $545) aboard a single-screw Mainship Pilot 30. Subjects include maneuvering in confined quarters and in open water; crew coordination; overboard recovery; anchoring; knots; boat systems; rules of the road; VHF use; chart instruction; coastal and celestial navigation; and tides and currents.

There is also a three-day course aboard a single-screw Mainship 39 Trawler that includes a trip up the Napa River—so even beginners can taste the epicurean culture that local cruisers enjoy.
