Mikelson 50 Luxury Sportfisher

Good thing, at least for Dick Peterson, the San Diego Yacht Club offers berths and docks for vessels of various sizes. As president of Mikelson Yachts, Peterson never knows which boat he’ll “have” from month to month. Nice problem, huh?

Case in point: Peterson had hoped to use the new 59-foot Mikelson for our tour of San Diego Bay. But the model sold before we could get to it. No matter—he nabbed a Mikelson 50 Luxury Sportfisher.

For the record, there is no “Mr. Mikelson” of Mikelson Yachts (619-222-5007, www.mikelsonyachts.com). The name is a pure contrivance, an odd blend of Michael and Peterson. There is, however, a Tom Fexas, and the Mikelson 50, like all the builder’s models, was designed by the noted naval architect. The 50-foot, 5-inch-long motoryacht has a 16-foot, 8-inch beam and was introduced in 1988.

It can be ordered with two or three staterooms, as well as an aft galley.

The 50 has exceptional long-range capability for its class, “Peterson says.” At reasonable speeds, the boat has over a 1,000-mile range.”
