• Be upfront at the Canadian border about what you have in your stores. Carrying a firearm into Canada will prove much more trouble than it’s worth.

• Audio books are invaluable for a long haul, especially if they’re relevant to the areas you’re traveling through: Smoke Jumpers in Montana and Dances with Wolves in South Dakota make the landscape come alive.

• Spend the money on a secure storage area so you don’t have to wonder if your vehicle will be where you parked it after seven weeks.

• Be prepared to buy fuel ... lots of it. Our Grady-White 270 traveled 1,950 nautical miles on 965 gallons. The Ford Excursion got eight miles to the gallon when towing the boat.

What’s your best cruising story? Whether it’s daring or hilarious or inspirational or just plain cool, e-mail it to kimkavin@optonline.net. No phone calls, please.
