Charter Options

Unfortunately, charter options in the St. Paul vicinity are limited at best. The closest bareboat option is Stillwater Marina Boat Rental (651-439-0350, www.stillwatermarina.com) in Stillwater, Minnesota, on the St. Croix River. It has smaller cuddy-cruisers, pontoons, and runabouts. The good news is that by chartering there, you get to see more of the area’s best cruising grounds and need only go through one lock on your way to St. Paul.

For a turn-of-the-century experience, you can take a river tour on a historic paddleboat with the Padelford Packet Boat Company (800-543-3908, www.padelfordboats.com). Narrated tours run from an hour and a half to four hours long, and ticket prices range from $15 for adults to $7.50 for children ages 5 to 12. You also can get on the local waters by skipping the hotel and instead staying at the Covington Inn (651-292-1411, www.covingtoninn.com), a working towboat that’s been converted into a floating bed and breakfast.
